This visa is designed to encourage migrants to live and work in regional areas of Australia where there are large skills shortages.
There are three pathways for this visa:
-Extended Stay pathway (for applicants that have held a provisional visa in subclass 496, 495, 487 or 475.)
-Invited pathway (requires you to submit an Expression of Interest and obtain an invitation to apply for the visa. We will explain the application process for both pathways)
Subsequent entry pathway (is for applicants who are a member of family unit of someone who already holds a Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) or a subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa).
Who is eligible for a subclass 489 visa?
You may be eligible if:
-you hold a subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa (Extended Stay pathway)
-be nominated by a state or territory government agency or be sponsored by an eligible relative (Invited pathway)
-have a relevant occupation
have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
-meet the points test pass mark of 65 points
-be under 45 years of age at time of invitation
-have Competent English.
-be invited to apply (Invited pathway)
-have sponsorship from an eligible relative living in a designated region of Australia or from a State or Territory Government.

What are the benefits in holding a subclass 489 visa?
- stay in Australia for up to 4 years
- live, work and study in a specified region of Australia
- travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
- apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Skilled-Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887).
