Skill Assessment: Australian Registration for Medical Professionals: Doctors & Specialist (International Medical Doctors)

To put it in simple terms, there are several assessment pathways for registration for overseas trained medical practitioners: 

Pathways to a Doctor’s Visa

  1. Standard Pathway

This is a pathway that is available to applicants who are not eligible for either the Competent Authority Pathway or the Specialist Pathway.  Like for the other pathways, the applicants must have primary qualification in medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution recognised by Australian Medical Council and the World Directory of Medical Schools.

  1. Competent Authority Pathway

This pathway is for international trained non-specialists or specialists, which would lead to general registration, who completed
who completed training or assessment from an approved competent authority can apply for provisional registration visa this pathway.

Some of the approved competent authorities are:

  • Educational commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the US (USMLE)
  • Medical Council of New Zealand (NZREX)
  • Medical Council of Ireland
  • General Medical Council (UK)
  • Medical Council of Canada (LMCC)
  1. Specialist Pathway

This pathway is available to overseas trained specialist Doctors applying for registration through specialist pathway.

This pathway is available to Specialist who have completed all the training and examination requirements to practise in their field of specialty in their country of training or no more than 2 years away from completing their specialist training overseas.

The primary qualification completed MUST be in medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution recognised by Australian Medical Council and the World Directory of Medical Schools.

The below are the specialist who can apply for specialist application directly to the relevant specialist college for assessment:

  • Anaesthetist
  • Dental Surgeons
  • Dermatologist
  • Obstetricians & Gynaecologists
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Intensive Care Medicine
  • Medical Administrators
  • Sport and Exercise Physicians
  • Surgeons
  • Radiologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Pathologists
  • Ophthalmologists 

If you occupation is not on the above list, don’t worry – there many more occupations accepted for assessment as a specialist.
